Speciation of metals in natural waters

چکیده

The form or speciation of a metal in natural waters can change its kinetic and thermodynamic properties. For example, Cu(II) in the free ionic form is toxic to phytoplankton, while copper complexed to organic ligands is not toxic. The form of a metal in solution can also change its solubility. For example, Fe(II) is soluble in aqueous solutions while Fe(III) is nearly insoluble. Natural organic ligands interactions with Fe(III) can increase the solubility by 20-fold in seawater. Ionic interaction models that can be used to determine the activity and speciation of divalent and trivalent metals in seawater and other natural elements will be discussed. The model is able to consider the interactions of metals with the major (Cl, SO4 , HCO3 , CO3 , Br, F) and minor (OH, H2PO4 , HPO4 , PO4 , HS) anions as a function of temperature (0 to 50 uC), ionic strength [0 to 6 m (m ~ mol kg)] and pH (1 to 13). Recently, it has been shown that many divalent metals are complexed with organic ligands. Although the composition of these ligands is not known, a number of workers have used voltammetry to determine the concentration of the ligand [L] and the stability constant (KML) for the formation of the complex MzL?ML KML~1⁄2ML =1⁄2M 1⁄2L

Speciation of heavy metals in coastal water of Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf

Fuel storage tanks are one of the main sources of water pollution as well as loss of crude oil and oil products in refineries.  In the process of utilization of these tanks, considerable amounts of hydrocarbons may find their way into the coastal water, which eventually lead to loss of valuable hydrocarbons. Oil type, climatic condition and characteristics of oil tanks are among the main variab...

Evaluation of background geochemical speciation of heavy metals in overburden topsoil of bituminous sand deposit area, Ondo state, Nigeria

Metals are ubiquitous within the earth crust. However, the exceptional high-level concentration of heavy metals in the soil due to natural or anthropogenic activities and the chemical forms in which they exist determine the level of risk they portend to the environment. This work was aimed at determining the background level of the presence of seven priority toxic metals (Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Cd, Cu...

Metals complexation with humic acids in surface water of different natural–climatic zones

Humic acids extracted from different soils. The stability constants of metal humates and acid dissociation constant humic acids were calculated. Forms of metals in natural waters was determined with use account their chemical composition and content and properties of organic matter. We assessed metals speciation in water objects with account for competitive reactions resulting in formation of h...

Critical Review Environmental Chemistry of Aminopolycarboxylate Chelating Agents

Aminopolycarboxylate chelating agents are under scrutiny due to their influence on metal availability and mobility and in particular due to their persistence in the environment. In this review chelate adsorption, metal-mobilization, metalexchange, mineral dissolution, reactive transport, photodegradation, and chemical degradation are all shown to be substantially affected by the chelated metal ...

Effects of Ligand Speciation on Determinations of the Complexing Abilities of Strong Ligands in Natural Waters

The presence of organic ligands (L) whose conditional stability constants (K′ML) are strong enough to allow them to form complexes with copper has been reported in oceanic waters. However, there is no general agreement on the distributional characteristics of such strong ligands in the water column. We present that these inconsistencies are derived from not only different analytical methods emp...
